On Saturday, February 28th, the Trump administration launched an illegal and brutal war on Iran that threatens to engulf the whole region. 

This is a war of choice that could lead to untold destruction and death of working people in the region, including U.S. service members, and is being paid for by our tax dollars. While social services are being eviscerated and millions of working people in the U.S. are working paycheck to paycheck and paying exorbitant costs for healthcare and housing, the Trump administration is dragging us into a war that costs upwards of one billion dollars a day. While weapons manufacturers and billionaires profit, the working class suffers.

We’ve seen this story before. Less than 25 years ago, we were told lie after lie about the threat of “weapons of mass destruction”, which has since been thoroughly debunked. Over 1 million Iraqis and thousands of US service members died and trillions of dollars of our tax dollars were wasted as a result.

Now, Trump wants us to believe that Iran poses an existential threat to US national security. But we will not fall for another war based on lies. 

The majority of people oppose another regime change war in the Middle East. Recent polls show that a vast majority of Americans are against Trump’s war on Iran. The labor movement has a duty to stand for working class interests here in the US and around the world and to actively fight against another war that will only benefit the billionaire class. We the undersigned trade unionists have joined Labor United for Peace to oppose this illegal and unjust war.

We call for an immediate end to the war on Iran and to instead use our tax dollars to address the dire affordability crisis in the United States.
